The Daughters of Our Lady of Fatima were founded in 1952 at Rushoroza Parish, Kabale Diocese, by Reverend Sister Amedeo Byabali (1907–1979).

Sr. Amedeo was a Ugandan religious sister and a member of the Daughters of Mary, the first indigenous women’s religious institute in Sub-Saharan Africa. Her deep love for the Blessed Virgin Mary and her desire to spread the message of Fatima inspired the birth of this new congregation.

On 18 February 2012, the Vatican officially declared Sr. Amedeo Byabali a “Servant of God,” recognizing her life of heroic virtue and opening the path toward her possible canonization.

Early Formation and Guidance

In the early years, Sr. Amedeo was assisted by Rev. Fr. Paul Mischler, a member of the Society of the Missionaries of Africa and Parish Priest of Rushoroza. He served as the principal formator of the first eight young women who responded to the call and began the religious community.

These pioneers laid the foundation of a congregation rooted in prayer, discipline, and total trust in God.

Growth and Ecclesial Support

The development and continuity of the Daughters of Our Lady of Fatima were made possible through the guidance and encouragement of several bishops who nurtured the congregation and supported its apostolic mission. Among them were:

  • Rt. Rev. Gervase Nkalanga

  • Rt. Rev. Barnabas Halemi Imana

  • Rt. Rev. Robert Mary Gay

  • Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira

Their pastoral leadership enabled the congregation to grow in stability, spiritual depth, and service within the Church.

Growth of the Charism

From its humble beginnings in Rushoroza, the congregation gradually expanded its apostolic presence, remaining faithful to its founding inspiration. The sisters continued to live out a spirituality centered on:

  • Prayer and sacrifice

  • Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

  • Service to the poor and marginalized

  • Simplicity, humility, and obedience

  • Witnessing Christ through daily life

Through their prayerful presence, pastoral outreach, and community witness, the Daughters of Our Lady of Fatima continue to contribute meaningfully to the evangelizing mission of the Church.
